William Randolph Hearst named the castle La Cuesta Encantada -
The Enchanted Hill. Set against the verdant Santa Lucia mountains on a
coastal knoll, its 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools, and palatial guest
houses create a perfect setting for the magnificent Mediterranean revival
mansion, Casa Grande. The project was a collaboration between William
Randolph Hearst himself and Ms. Julia Morgan, a distinguished San Francisco
architect. The work began in the fall of 1919 and lasted until William
Randolph Hearst's death almost three decades later.
The idea came to Curt Pindler one morning in March of
1996. He wanted to develop a line that was completely different from
what others were offering. Although Pindler & Pindler had grown to
be the largest decorative fabric resource west of the Mississippi, he couldn't
rest on his laurels. Innovative, fresh exclusive product is the name of
the game. Mr. Pindler placed a call and connected with Hoyt Fields,
chief curator at Hearst Castle®.
About six months later a six-year licensing agreement was signed. All
royalties from sales go directly to the preservation of Hearst Castle®.
The Hearst Castle®
Collection is the result of intense work by Pindler & Pindlers’ design
department. Research involved innumerable trips to Hearst Castle®.
Potential pattern sources were photographed and sketched, and many of the
designs went through as many as 5 metamorphoses before being finalized for
production. As work progressed, enthusiasm for this project grew
throughout the company, but nowhere more than with Curt Pindler, who has
worked through every phase of development with his design team.
The Hearst Castle®
Collection has grown in both popularity and size since its introduction in
1998. Beginning with 98 exclusive fabrics, the line has grown to over
300 exclusive fabrics, including 83 new fabrics introduced in 2002.
Among the new additions you will find exquisite tapestries, ornate chenille
upholsteries and beautiful damasks, available in a unique array of color ways
that are sure to inspire the artist in everyone.
Our arrangement with Hearst Castle®
allows us to interpret traditional European, Middle Eastern and Moorish
documents. The estate is somewhat of a time capsule, reflecting bygone
lifestyles, society and tastes, and the Hearst Castle®
Collection embodies the nostalgia of this lost era of style and
sophistication.
